About Alonissos National Marine Park

Established in 1992, Alonissos National Marine Park is located in the Northern Sporades archipelago of the Aegean Sea, Greece. It encompasses the waters surrounding the islands of Alonissos, Peristera, Gioura, Kyra Panagia, and several smaller islets. This marine park spans approximately 2,260 square kilometers, protecting one of the most significant habitats for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, as well as diverse marine flora and fauna, including dolphins, sea turtles, and numerous fish species. The park is characterized by steep underwater cliffs, caves, and Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, which are vital for marine biodiversity. Visitors to the park can experience activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and boat tours, all set against a backdrop of pristine, turquoise waters and rugged island landscapes. Aside from its marine components, Alonissos Island offers hiking trails through olive groves, coastal forests, and traditional villages where visitors can explore local culture and history. The marine park serves both conservation and sustainable tourism goals, balancing human enjoyment with the protection of its fragile ecosystems. Its remote and relatively unspoiled nature draws eco-conscious travelers seeking wildlife encounters and natural beauty.
